The Dangers of Fluoride in Toothpaste?

OK, so let me just get one thing straight: The reason that I'm writing this article is that I've been confused by the proliferation of non-fluoride toothpastes on my natural supermarket shelves lately. I thought that fluoride prevented cavities and was good for the teeth?

...and then my favorite flavor of Tom's toothpaste, which used to come in both fluoride and non-fluoride versions, now only comes in a non-fluoride version.

That was the last straw. I could no longer keep myself in the dark about fluoride. I had to have answers. I vaguely understood that fluoridated water was a BAD THING, but the dentists have been waxing poetic about the wonders of fluoride for my whole life, so surely I should keep seeking out fluoride toothpaste in order to keep my dentists happy (or, paradoxically, at least keep my dental bills down)?

So, I decided to try and figure out why people dislike fluoride and say you shouldn't use it in toothpaste.

Apparently, fluoride is slightly more toxic than lead. It's a by-product of the aluminum manufacturing process, and is produced in rather large quantities. The attempt to market it as a health-improving product began in the 1930s/40s. In larger doses, it can actually produce tooth and bone decay, as it is non-biodegradable, and in excess can produce a condition called fluorosis, which is basically the reaction of the body to the toxin. Most experts agree that drinking fluoride in water is a very bad idea, and that fluoridated water should *not* be consumed. Living in cities (like Portland, OR) that do not fluoridate their water is, then, a GOOD THING.

However, the evidence as to whether the amount of fluoride contained in toothpaste is enough to be harmful seems to be inconclusive, as long as you don't swallow your toothpaste. Most web sites, when addressing that particular question, quickly change the topic to talk about the dangers of water fluoridation. Fluoride in toothpaste (very small amounts) can cause the teeth to better resist the acidity of the mouth, prolonging their resistance to tooth decay.

Fluorine is a gas, and in nature it will be found bonded with other substances, forming compounds such as calcium fluoride. Fluoride is a compound (a salt) that occurs when fluorine ion bonds with another agent. Calcium fluoride is the most-common naturally-occurring form of fluoride, and in small amounts it is not toxic. To the extent that calcium fluoride is the compound used in toothpaste, then, that toothpaste is probably not harmful if not swallowed.

Howers, the salts used in the fluoridation of water supplies, and potentially in some commercial toothpastes, include sodium fluoride and fluorosalicic acid. These are industrial by-products from manufacturing operations, and until the dental benefits of fluoride were popularized in the mid-20th century, their primary uses were in rat poision and insecticides.

OK, so here's where it gets interesting. I would expect Tom's of Maine to use Calcium Fluoride in their toothpaste, since it is the aknowledged least-toxic variety of the stuff.

However, when I look on the back of my Tom's Gingermint toothpaste, I see that it actually contains Sodium monofluorophosphate, 0.15% w/v fluoride ion.

That sounds a lot more like sodium fluoride combined with phosphate (soap) than it does calcium fluoride.

Hmm... so, perhaps there is something to this fluoridated-toothpaste-is-bad nonsense after all.

The remaining question is, what alternatives to fluoride exist that can successfully counter the effects of plaque acids on the teeth?

One potential answer is the amino acid arginine. In conjunction with calcium carbonate and bicarbonate, it is being marketed as CaviStat, an anti-cavity alternative to fluoride.

Another is... get ready for this one... the ionic activity produced by the reaction of two differing metals in combination with the saliva in the mouth. A toothbrush impregnated with two separate discs of magnesium and copper will generate an electrical current in the mouth between the two nodes.

"The magnesium copper metal combination generates a voltage of 0.8 – 1.8 and an electric current of 2 – 1200 mA in water, in addition to H 3 O 2 - negative ions. Bacteria in the mouth may be sterilized by voltage over 1.3, which creates an electric sterilization effect. This electron activity helps remove dental plaque from areas where conventional toothbrushes cannot reach.

"Stains and discoloring can be reduced by the Hydroxyl (H 3 O 2 ) negative ion’s surface-active effect."

(From http://www.protontoothbrush.com/)

The sweetener Xylitol can apparently also be used to reduce plaque and fight cavities. It is a sweetener, not a toxin. However, due to its unusual chemical structure, it attracts micro-organisms with its "sweetnesss," and then actually starves them, allowing the mouth to remineralize damaged teeth with less interruption (according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol).

The bottom line is that fluoride is a poison that helps to kill off all the bacteria in your mouth when you brush your teeth, both the beneficial bacteria and the harmful ones that promote tooth decay. To the extent that a small amount of poision may be good for promoting dental health (and to the extent that it already occurs naturally), this may be OK.

However, there's no good reason to ever ingest fluoride, as its only benefits are when it is applied topically. Allowing it to pass the throat/mouth barrier is just inviting your kidneys to be over-worked by processing this toxin.

As to which toothpaste to purchase? That's your own decision. I don't see any easy answers, but at least we may know which questions to ask, and at least at this point, the marketplace is providing many non-fluoride toothpaste and dental health options for us. Our job is to pick the one that is best suited to keeping our dental bills low, without harmful side effects.

cheers,
~Garlynn

Hey thanks for your insight Garlynn. I'm a mom up in Ontario surfing the web for alternatives to flouride. My Dentist wants my 10 year old son to use a stronger than normal mouthwash..im not quite ready to jump on her band-wagon yet so thanks for your blog.

Hey Catherine,

There are some mouthwashes out there that are plenty strong, and have the same effect in terms of preventing disease, freshening breath, etc., without using fluoride. One of them is produced by this company.

Actually 99% of toothpastes use Sodium Fluoride, which is pretty toxic. I have not found ANY products that use naturally occurring calcium Fluoride (which is much much LESS toxic) And the mouth absorbs Fluoride VERY VERY well, so rinse good when you are finished.

If you like Tom's of Maine because they don't test on animals and are all natural, you might want to re-think buying their products.
Colgate now owns them, and while they still will use all natural ingredients and not test on animals, the money that you spend on their products ultimately will be going to a very large company that doesn't care about these things. Just to keep you in the know :)

Thanks for the info. Even if Tom's of Maine is mostly owned by Colgate/Palmolive now, by buying those products instead of Colgate products, you're still using your money and choice of purchace to show the big wigs that you, the consumer (and, after all, it is all about the consumer), YOU want better products, better for your health and the environment. And that matters.

Hey great blog!I was just investigating about the effects of fluoride in toothpaste and have found an healthier alternative... supposedly. At a time where we as Americans don't control our own manufacturing companies we have to be cautious of what products we give to our children. Hey! This is not good information! What is your source for the statement that sodium monofluorophpsphate is toxic? It is NOT sodium combined with fluoride combined with phosphate (soap). First of all, phosphate is not soap, it's a negatively charged ion which combines easily with positively charged ions like sodium. Saying it's soap is like saying carbon is food (it's also pencil lead and diamonds). Second, don't you think that if fluoride were very toxic, there'd be a lot of sick people, since it's in almost everyone's toothpaste and water? Or are you blaming everyone's health issues on fluoride, and if we got rid of it everyone would be ok? Fluoride does not work by "killing bacteria", it works by binding to the calcium in teeth (fluoride is negatively charged and calcium is postively charged) and making them harder. ANd it clearly does work in the sense that it reduces cavities. This has been shown in many objective scientific studies, and is not simply a statement on some website somewhere.

Please think a little bit. Being skeptical doesn't mean you don't believe the government and big companies, and you do believe any old crock out there with a web page. Being skeptical means you learn what you need to learn to truly understand information and then make your own decisions.

Thanks so much for doing the research on this convoluted topic. I filter my water and have stopped using fluoride toothpastes and rinses, but I had braces put on today and they told me it's VERY important to use fluoride during treatment. So I've been grappling w/ this moral dilemma all day; thanks for helping me make an informed decision.

Hey, to anyone else interested in learning a bit more about fluoride, but want to listen to someone with a bit more manners than that guy a few posts ago, here is some extra information to compliment what Garlynn said.

He/she was right about one thing. Fluoride's primary purpose in toothpaste is not to kill bacteria, though it does kill some bacteria. It is in the same chemical group as bromine and chlorine, which one might use to clean their pool. It's primary purpose is to bind to your teeth, harden them, and protect them from acids. There are other things in toothpaste to take care of bacteria.

The reason why fluorine is so good for your teeth is also why it can be so bad if ingested. It binds to enamel (teeth and bones). Thus, if it is swallowed, it will sequester in your bones and possibly damage your marrow. So, if your are going to use fluoride, you have to really think about what you are using it for.

If you have a small child, most of which are vulnerable to toxicity, you may not need as much fluoride. Their baby teeth are going to fall out anyway and when they are young they are much more likely to swallow some of the toothpaste. So, it seems reasonable that you may want to use less fluoride.

That being said, sodium fluoride is really excellent for your teeth. The excellent condition of the average American mouth, when compared to the mouth's of many European nations, is that we allow our citizens to use stronger chemicals to keep our mouths clean and our teeth protected.

If you are healthy, don't have issues with your kidneys or bones, and have adult teeth, you are usually fine using a bit of fluoride toothpaste. As with most things, the real devil is in chronic use. If you are told you are developing some small cavities or have been eating a lot of sweets, by all means, use a high fluoride toothpaste. Just don't use high fluoride all the time and make sure not to swallow any.

I hope this cleared up a few things.

Hey Garlynn, thanks for starting this discussion. In looking at both Toms of Maine and Jason's lines of fluoridated toothpaste, both offer sodium monofluorophosphate, which they state is derived from calcium fluoride. (That form of fluoride seems to be widely referenced as the least toxic.) The difference is that Jason brand does NOT have sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) in their product, which many sources site as also being an irritant and even a toxin, depending on the amount.

As you noted in your post, Toms also offers a non-fluoride version of their toothpaste and that one does not have SLS. Because I need some fluoride protection, for myself, I am using the Jason brand.

In closing I found these posts while searching to see which form of fluoride is the most effective, but thanks to this discussion I learned more about the dangers of fluoride, which should be common knowledge but aren't, and in doing so am changing my purchasing and use habits. Thanks!!!!

recently at the dental clinic I go to, the dentists were making fun of me for saying that fluoride is poison, etc....it was terrible...then, of course one of them had to bring up 'conspiracy theory'-anyhoo, if you think about it, even if you just brush your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste, isn't it gonna go into your bloodstream through your tongue, under the tongue, etc... (just like chlorine in water goes through your pores in your shower?) I have been trying to deal with this seeking a good alternative to fluoride myself, and I am aggravated...also, I just recently read about 'calcification of the pineal gland' from fluoride use...I honestly can't remember if it said it is just from internally ingesting through fluoridated water or also by brushing one's teeth with fluoride, but it is worth looking into...it really didn't surprise me when I read it. As for the person that claimed we would all be walking around sick if all this stuff was true, well, guess what? We are all pretty much walking around sick!!!! People don't realize how many chemicals, pesticides and tainted food we are taking into our bodies that have been proven to cause cancer and so many other maolodies...our livers are on overload from it all!

You may not ingest large enough quantities of sodium flouride in one brush, but just think about the number of times you brush your tweeth. Once, twice a day, maybe more. Plus, you do not need to ingest sodium flouride for it to enter the blood stream, as it can cross the skin barriers. Even a majority of tooth paste averts now show how tooth can enter the blood stream via cavities, created mostly by processed sugars and fizzy drinks.

I believe you Jonathan! I know that one of the craziest things that the government has done to the unsuspecting public (sheeple) was to fluoridate our public water supply- too bad alot of us didn't know any better about it sooner...just one of the many ways they are committing genocide.... :(

Simple hydrogen peroxide makes an excellent mouthwash. It disinfects your mouth, too! Some people don't even use toothpaste, just H2O2 to rinse their mouth and brush their teeth, and they report having never had cavities. It's interesting.

thanks for this information! we quit using fluoridated toothpaste when our first child turned 5. i thought something that should not be swallowed, really has no business being in your mouth! Thanks for the alternative solutions too. the electric current idea works for swimming pools as well, then you don't have to use the chlorine!
If anyone is interested in seeing a dentist that won't chastise you for your anti fluoride stance, you could try finding a holistic or biological dentist.
I have many questions about the research that indicates fluoride reduces decay. Is it possible that simply brushing with water could have had the same results? I am just wondering!
Thanks again!

@Christy....
well...I don't think brushing with water would be enough, simply because preventing plaque and other issues in the mouth involves killing bacteria and cavity prevention needs some kind of protection when it comes to the chewing of sugars/starches that break down tooth enamel-yes...rinsing with water right after eating any food/beverage is beneficial, but I believe you really need more than water...but supposedly avoiding soft drinks, sweet desserts and candy (especially chewy kinds that stick to your teeth more-including any foods which stick to your teeth more)is one of the best precautions to prevent cavaties...btw...the people in remote parts of the world like indigenous peoples have healthier teeth many times because they don't have access to cavity making soft drinks and candy :) Also...I have recently tried two new great toothpastes, which are fluoride free: Spry (with Xylitol-great stuff!) and Claybrite (which has montmorillonite clay and it whitens teeth, heals gums, contols cavaties and eliminates bad breath) they are great! the clay one is brown, but hey....it's great! *montmorillonite clay is wonderful for so many things...check it out! God bless you all :) Tami

I think the biggest issue with fluoride is not really toothpaste, but fluoridated drinking water, which you take internally rather than topically. A lot of anti-fluorine dentists I've read say it wouldn't be so bad if it was just used topically, rubbed on the teeth (or in toothpaste, which you don't swallow), but that we probably don't really need to be ingesting it in such large quantities from our drinking water.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous
well, I agree to some extent on what you said about the big problem being the ingested fluoride in water in large quantities over time, but the thing is, even mere 'topical' applications can be absorbed through the mouth/under the tongue etc., so even topical isn't 'just topical' technically....

To All,

very intersting reading the comments...there are always pro & contra...I'm not a fan of flouride in toothpaste or mouthwash...therefore I found products without flouride. My point of view is that flouride does not make my teeth stronger...and I do not use flouride tooth paste for more than 7 years...I have perfect teeth...coming from a European country...I think going to the dentist on a regular basis, less sugar (don't drink Coke & Lemonade) might be the secret for healthy teeth...and Calcium...isn't that what we give our kids to develope strong bones and theeth???

Yes, it also occurs to me that fluoride is a bad thing. But apart from toothpaste and mouth wash there are other sources of which fluoride can get into your body. Just try to stay away from fluoride if you can!

The bigger your mouth is the more toothpaste you need. If your mouth is really big try to brush your teeth at least three times a day so that your breath doesn't become toxic and poison the people around you. Fluoride is an ingredient in toothpaste. Toothpaste comes in many flavors. Also, don't forget to wash your face, and clean your eyes to get all the caked on crust out of them, and brush your hair because you're not Leonard DiCaprio, or Jimmy Fallon. You can be poor and broke, there's no sin in that, but being a filthy slob is a deadly sin. Don't forget to use your manners, and your turn signal, the world is full of morons, don't be a contributor to stupidity. Show some class.

Ok Ill get straight to the point NICE AND EASY.
Fluoride collects in the penal Gland or third eye. IT slows it down and even shuts it down depending on the amount of fluoride. It takes away your spirituality and leaves ur in their materialistic world. Fluoride is used to create atomic bombs and the government puts it in the water? TO DUMB DOWN SOCIETY. TO take away every EOC out there. TO take away every writing test out there. THis is just one way the use to control us. OH by the way don't be afraid that your teeth will fall out because they use fear as a way to control you. All the way from cancer to your kid being born wrong. Remember, you manifest your own destiny that's what free will is.

Ok; I saw an article about this on Yahoo a few days ago. It got me looking around and got me thinking. Calcum fluoride is the naturally occuring form of fluoride that's supposed to be not as toxic. Maybe, just maybe, it's the CALCIUM in the calcium fluoride that is good for you teeth and bones. In that case, sodium fluoride doesn't have a leg to stand on. So, someone probably came up with idea to up sell the fluoride part of calcium fluoride so it would be easier to push sodium fluoride. Which any kid in 8th grade science can tell you that they are 2 different compounds that share a common element. Does not mean common properties. IE Try to breat some carbon monoxide or water; they both contain oxygen and oxygen is good for you.

I am very upset right now to have been so blind! I was refraining on using much fluoride toothpaste for the the first years of my 5 year old's life... and I took my then 4 year old and 1.5 year old to the dentist last year and he recommended my one year old to swallow the toothpaste, that it would help him with preparing for his teeth. WTF! I am kicking myself for listening for about a month or so... then now a year later, coaching both to spit it out! I am so disappointed in myself for not doing my research sooner! I was too trusting in my dentist and the TOM's brand! Should I be looking for symptoms and connecting the dots. I am bummed:(
